About Shasta McBride

I grew up on Kauai in a family of artists, mathematicians, and spiritualists surrounded by incredible natural beauty and power in the mountains, the ocean, and the people. I would explore my exotic surroundings and then write down what I saw and what it felt like, because everything felt like an exploding revelation I wanted to commune with.

I remember my mother taking me under a waterfall to a secret chamber in a hidden valley when I was five, and telling me we had gone to Narnia. Everything was like that: magic, happy, and possible. I wanted to fuse with everything.

I studied English Literature and Creative Writing at Lewis & Clark College and later at UCLA’s Extension Programs and other classes. I’ve worked with writers Annie Dawid, Vern Rutsala, Mark Haskell Smith, Eduardo Santiago, Susan Wyler, Lisa Cron, and Melanie Thorne.

Night Surfing is my debut literary novel, begun in 2009. It’s been a long time in the making, and I am very grateful for the journey.
